Dentures are an inexpensive and relatively quick way to replace missing teeth. You may think that because your dentures are not your natural teeth, your days of brushing have come to an end. But, that is not the case. Food debris and bacteria will build upon your dentures throughout the day. Food particles can build up between your dentures and your gums or upper palate. You will need to clean your dentures at least once a day.

You will want to use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a denture brush to clean your dentures. Many people use hand or dish soap, while others use a toothpaste formulated for cleaning dentures. Regular toothpaste may contain abrasives that can damage your dentures.

Gently scrub your dentures over a sink full of water or a towel, that way, if you happen to drop them, you will minimize the chances of breaking them. While you are cleaning your dentures, be sure to brush your gums. That will remove any food particles and plaque that is present on your gums, and will stimulate the flow of blood.

You should not sleep with your dentures in. When you take them out at night, or for an extended period of time, you should place them in a soaking solution. Your dentures need to remain moist in order to retain their shape.

You will still need to see your dentist at least twice a year. Your dentist will make sure that your dentures still fit you properly, and will also check to see if your gums are healthy.
